About Us

Founded in 1960, the Buena Vista Historical Society is a volunteer run nonprofit organization dedicated to preserving Buena Vista County’s historical heritage. Located in downtown Storm Lake, Iowa, the main exhibits are housed in a 1920 Ford garage and dealership.
The museum is staffed by volunteers. Our collection has been acquired through donations by generous individuals who have shared their family treasures to expand the museum’s collections.
The museum’s mission is to preserve and promote interest in Buena Vista County’s historical heritage through collection and display of artifacts, documents, photographs and other materials. Museum volunteers and special guests host educational events and presentations in a meeting room equipped with modern technology for audiovisual presentations. Museum members contribute articles regularly to a locally owned, Pulitzer Prize winning newspaper, the Storm Lake Times Pilot.
The organization is governed by a museum board and officers who meet monthly. Annual meetings are open to museum members and the public.
The museum is funded through membership dues, fundraisers, tax-deductible donations and grant awards. To learn more about supporting the museum’s efforts through membership, financial support or donations, click here.
